Westin Riverwalk Hotel

San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio Riverwalk is a unique urban open space that runs through the center of the CBD.  The Riverwalk comes within two blocks of the historical Alamo.  This site is located on the corner of East Market and Navarro Street.  Moreover, the site fronts on the Riverwalk.

The design style complements the traditional San Antonio ‘mission’ design themes in its detailing and use of materials.

A streetscape design along East Market and Navarro Street and a formal auto-court/drop-off on East Market was included in our design efforts, as well.

Along the river, we designed the informal hardscape and softscape to continue the Riverwalk through the site. A water taxi drop-off was incorporated in this section of Riverwalk.

Beach Revitalization, Environmental Master Plan and Streetscape

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

This tropical south Florida destination has been the site for many college ‘spring break’ celebrations over the years, until 1985.  That year the city realized that the annual college celebration on their beaches was affecting the economic future of the city if it continued on its downward spiral.  The city wanted a change.

OSDA developed an environmental master plan that allowed for the redevelopment of the Barrier Island and specific design solutions for the 2 miles of beachfront uses.

Environmental issues included re-vegetation, wildlife protection and protection of existing palm trees.

Phillips proposed street and pedestrian lighting had to be shielded on the ocean side to avoid adversely attracting Sea Turtles to lay eggs on this beach.  Additionally, if any baby Sea Turtles hatched the lights from the streets would not confuse their direction to the ocean.

Sea Oats grasses were reintroduced to the beach in selected areas to help reduce the erosion of the sand by wind and wave action.

Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk and

Environmental Revitalization

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

The New River runs through the middle of Fort Lauderdale’s Central Business District.  A decision was made in 1986 to redevelop the river corridor.

Anchoring the West End of the new Riverwalk is a new Broward County Performing Arts Center.

Along the river are businesses, a new Discovery Center, parks, new high-rise residential towers and restaurants.  Mr. Phillips completed these master plan designs in 1989.

A water taxi business connects the Riverwalk attractions to the intercoastal waterway and the beach hotels.

Our scope included designing the Riverwalk connections to various attractions along the river.  Walks, pavilions, plazas were designed to enhance the restoration of native vegetation along the fresh, sometimes brackish, waters of the New River.  Pedestrian lighting, benches and other site furniture was designed to create a theme for the Riverwalk.
